quilforcfiom Quakers Take Victory at Homecoming Homecoming Happenings BY CAROLINE COLES and APRIL EVANS Homecoming '77 exuberated a festive and almost comic atmosphere that may be remembered by anything from Casper's "Brick House" to the half-smoked cigar laying on the deserted gambling table in "Shore's Saloon." The weekend drizzle may have cancelled the bonfire and outdoor bar-b-que, but it seemed to add to the excite ment of Saturday's game against James Madison Univeristy. Friday, excitement stirred slightly as Founders workers moved furniture for various receptions and the dance. A few enthusiastic alumni were here on Friday afternoon to register and inevitably to reminisce about their active days at Guilford. In all, sixty alumni got together Friday evening for a jolly reunion. It made one wonder what would be remembered most about 1977. Perhaps, it will be the Homecoming Dance. Although Casper did not arrive until late, they made up for any lost time. It appeared that almost all had a good time before, during and after the dance as many left smiling after the 3:00 a.m. edition of "Brick House." The band encompas sed the entire stage, playing new and old "Motown" hits. The next morning, despite the late bed times, some students were stirring in the early hours. Their objective? To win the first prize in the dorm decorations. For this year's homecoming the dorms represented four different eras. Bryan looked to a future homecoming with Star Wars complete with Light Sabers. The girls in Binford went back to 1977 B.C. The first floor lounge was transformed into a dark cave, the girls donned furry outfits and put bones in their hair. The first prize winner was "Shore's Saloon" which was exceptionally well planned. It was an "Old West Saloon" down to the most minute details including half-empty glasses On the bar and the rules of the establishment posted on the wall. The rules were familiar ones: no more than eight persons at the bar at one time and food must be eaten while drinking. In the meantime, there was an art exhibit in Hege-Cox Hall and a photo display in Founders Boren Lounge. Beneath each picture was a slot for written bids so that the highest bidder would obtain these gigantic black and white prints. The rain fell but spirits soared as an enthusiastic crowd of old and young helped the five new cheerleaders cheer on our winning team. There was an especially rowdy and musical group of cheerers who took over when the girls took their infrequent breaks, and added immensely to the true Homecoming Spirit. Saturday night, the alumni had their dinner and inducted four new members into the Hall of Fame. Possibly the most memorable events of the '77 Homecoming will be the ring of the cheerleaders: "Whomp' 'em up side the head;" Shore having a saloon and men in Hobbs on Saturday night! This weekend, Mary Hobbs was "closed due to lack of funds" as the girls portrayed the depression years. v - "^PHIP* jonnny Stewart breaks through the middle as Guilford shuts out James Madison.
